Our mission is to manage and operate safe, cost-efficient and environmentally sound services of the Leesburg Municipal Drinking Water Wells & elevated storage tanks and the Leesburg Water Pollution Control Plant for the benefit of the City of Leesburg. We will promote environmental stewardship as a community value and are committed to protecting and preserving the environment by maintaining and/or surpassing regulatory compliance & standards and educating our public.
The Leesburg Water Pollution Control Plant is the wastewater treatment facility for the City of Leesburg. The plant is located west of the City, bordering the Kinchafoonee Creek. The plant, which replaced an outdated, undersized aeration pond, began operation in 2010 and can treat 1.2 million gallons per day with a maximum of 1.5 million gallons for any seven-day period. The City has overall responsibility that state and federal regulations and requirements are met.
The Leesburg Municipal Water System is composed of two water supply wells and two elevated storage tanks. The wells are located on Starksville Ave. and on Hwy. 32 east, next to Lee Co. High School. The elevated storage tanks are located on Smithville Rd. at the City Public Works facility (200,000 gallons) and at the Hwy. 32 east well site. (500,000 gallons) The Water System is regulated by the Ga. Environmental Protection Division and is permitted to withdraw up to 500,000 gallons of water per day from specific underground aquifers. As the water is pumped from the aquifers, it is treated with liquid sodium hypochlorite (chlorine) and sodium fluorosilicic acid (fluoride) before it is then sent into the water system mains and elevated storage tanks.
The operation and maintenance of the plant and wells/elevated storage tanks is performed by the Water/Wastewater Superintendent, Russ Ferguson and Water/Wastewater Operator, Todd Thornton. It is a 24-hour, 365 days per year operation with the staff on hand 8-10 hours per day. They are also on-call after hours, for any emergency situations.
